Band of the Day (06.18.10): ROBYN
Who?
Easily Sweden's biggest pop star, Robyn has had a strange career that has taken her from traditional radio staple to one of the most forward-thinking artists today. First gaining international fame as a teenager for (fairly generic) songs like "Show Me Love," Robyn spent years as a superstar before fading from the main stage outside Europe. However, Robyn had a career rebirth with her 2005 self-titled album, which featured excellent electropop production from the Knife and Kleerup among others. The album made her the pop star of choice for indie kids across the globe and another big hit in the form of "With Every Heartbeat." She released the first album in five years, Body Talk Pt. 1, this week.
And I Care Because?
- She's finally become herself. While no one could have predicted that Robyn would grow into the art-pop sensation she is today, it still makes sense. While an artist starting in their early teenage years is bound to stick to convention, Robyn had enough time and power by the time she was an adult to become a singular entity, carving her own style inside the pop genre.
- A step further. While Robyn truly came into her own on her self-titled album, she's moving further into uncharted territory on Body Talk Pt. 1. Featuring even more off-the-wall production from the likes of Diplo and Royksopp, she's pushing her beats forward while keeping her pop sensibilities in tact.
- When it rains it pours. Despite going five years without a new album, Robyn is determined to make up for it this year. Releasing three mini-albums (the first containing eight tracks), Robyn's making up for lost time, and after this first portion, we're pretty stoked to hear more.
